You can get plenty of protein without any animal products. Soy foods like tofu, tempeh and edamame have the most, and beans, lentils and split peas come close while adding a lot of fiber. Seeds and nuts add a bit more protein along with healthy fats. Sort by protein per 100 calories to see which foods give you the most protein for their calories.

Need an app to track your protein?
Somatics keeps your calories, carbs, protein and fat in one place, so you can see how close you are to your targets every day.
How to use this list
Most people who work out do well with about 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight a day (1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram), and that's the same whether your protein comes from plants or animals. Find your own number with our free Protein Calculator. Building each meal around a soy food or a cup of beans or lentils makes that number a lot easier to reach than nuts and seeds, which bring a lot of calories along with their protein.
Common questions
Which vegan food has the most protein?
Soy foods have the most. A cup of firm tofu has about 44 grams, a cup of tempeh about 34 and a cup of cooked soybeans about 31. Of the beans and lentils, lentils come out on top with about 18 grams a cup.
Are plant proteins complete proteins?
Soy foods like tofu, tempeh and edamame have all nine essential amino acids, and so do quinoa and hemp seeds. Most other plant foods are low in at least one, but eating a mix of beans, grains, nuts and seeds over the day covers all of them.
